In February 2018 KFC switched its UK delivery contract from Bidvest, which ran six regional warehouses, to DHL, which consolidated distribution into a single warehouse in Rugby and had no prior experience moving chilled food at that volume. The GMB union had warned KFC before the switch that the single-site model was fragile; within days of going live, deliveries collapsed and more than half of KFC's roughly 900 UK restaurants had to close, some for over a week, at the height of the brand's weekend trading.

The standard corporate playbook for a self-inflicted supply failure is a statement heavy on regret and light on specifics, timed to move the story along as fast as possible — the instinct is to look serious and minimise, not to draw more attention to the joke already forming on social media about a fried-chicken chain with no chicken. KFC and its agency Mother instead decided the joke was going to be told regardless, and that the only open question was who would tell it first.

Rearranged its own logo into 'FCK' with 'We're sorry,' owning the joke before the internet could, and paired it with honest specifics to turn embarrassment into a win.

The situation was too funny for social media to ignore, so the joke was inevitable.

By making the joke first, KFC left no room for critics to exploit the gap.

The ad paired humor with specific, honest details, making it read as authentic accountability.

This turned a potential PR disaster into a reputational win, earning awards and positive coverage.

When your failure is already a joke, own it: make the joke yourself, with humility and honesty, to disarm critics.

The ad ran as the crisis was still resolving and was widely covered as turning a logistics failure into a reputational win rather than a story about incompetence; it went on to win three Cannes Lions Gold and one Silver, including Gold in Print & Publishing, plus the Grand Prix for Campaign of the Year at the 2018 Marketing New Thinking Awards.
