Every fast-food chain in Singapore runs a Chinese New Year promotion. KFC Singapore, with R/GA, replaced the usual ang-bao packets and discounts with its first 'Huat Heist': a heist game with up to S$18,000 in real cash behind a vault at the KFC Kallang outlet.

From 8 January 2025, eight lucky numbers were hidden in KFC Cereal Chicken campaign posters — at Tampines, Serangoon, Bishan and Harbourfront MRT stations plus bus stops islandwide — with riddle clues dropped on KFC's social channels. From 13 January, any Cereal Chicken purchase (dine-in, takeaway, delivery, or via Grab, Deliveroo and Foodpanda) produced a receipt worth one attempt at keying the eight-digit vault code.

On heist day, hopefuls presented receipts at Kallang — five tries per customer before re-joining the queue. Crack it on 22 January and S$9,000 was yours; if the vault held, the pot snowballed to S$18,000 for the 5 February round, with any unwon money pledged to charity.

The Effie Awards Singapore 2025 jury shortlisted Huat Heist in the Seasonal Marketing category — the effectiveness gate confirming that a stunt structured around receipts moved sales, not just social chatter.

Make the island the puzzle and the receipt the token

The dumb alternative was another CNY discount: instantly matched by rivals, margin-eroding, and forgotten within the festive fortnight.

Hiding digits in public posters gives each placement a second life — commuters who would ignore a chicken ad will stop to read one that might hold a number.

Receipt-per-attempt prices the game in fried chicken: every guess is a purchase, so the mechanic is self-funding and inflates basket size on its own.

The snowball jackpot and the single physical vault make the finale an event the press can film — scarcity and spectacle do the paid media's job.

A puzzle with a snowballing jackpot buys attention with anticipation instead of discounts — and since the purchase is the ticket, engagement and sales are the same act.

The heist ran across two Wednesdays in January and February 2025, with the vault waiting at Kallang and the island's posters carrying the digits. Whatever the vault's fate, the Effie Singapore 2025 shortlist in Seasonal Marketing put the campaign among the year's most effective work — and gave KFC a CNY platform built on anticipation rather than price-offs, at the cost of one vault and S$18,000 of headline prize money.
