Mazda made the Wankel rotary work by fixing the seals everyone else gave up on.
Mazda took a license on a smooth rotary engine that rivals abandoned, then solved the apex seals that made it leak.

the move
The rotary engine invented by Felix Wankel in 1957 was mechanically elegant: a triangular rotor spinning in a fat housing, no pistons, no reciprocating mass, unbelievably smooth and compact. It was the only internal-combustion engine invented in the 20th century to reach production.
But it leaked. The seals at the tips of the rotor wore out, so compression escaped and the engine lost power. over a dozen makers — Alfa Romeo, Mercedes, Porsche, GM, Toyota, Nissan, Citroën, Rolls-Royce, Suzuki — took licenses, but almost all walked away as the seals kept failing.
Mazda signed a study contract with NSU in 1961 under president Tsuneji Matsuda, and made the rotary its bet. Kenichi Yamamoto took over the rotary research department in 1963 and attacked the apex seals, designing them from carbon and specially processed sintered aluminum.
With the seals fixed, experimental engines ran 300 hours at high speed. Mazda sold its first rotary car, the Cosmo, in 1967, and by 1978 had the RX-7; the rotary that others rejected became Mazda's identity.

what came after
Mazda's rotary powered the RX-7, the most successful car in IMSA history, and in 1991 a four-rotor 787B took the overall win at Le Mans, the first Japanese car to do so. The rotary's poor fuel economy and sealing eventually limited it, but Mazda kept the design alive as its brand-defining signature.
