BYD's blade battery skipped the module and packed LFP cells straight into the frame

Instead of fighting LFP's energy-density gap with chemistry, BYD removed the module step and put blade cells straight into the pack — 50% more space, no fire.

BYD launched the Blade Battery in March 2020, saying it wanted to bring battery safety back to the forefront after the industry's single-minded pursuit of energy density. Chairman Wang Chuanfu framed it as redefining the industry's safety standards.

The invention is a process and structure breakthrough: cells shaped like blades are packed directly into the pack, skipping the module. Space utilization rises by over 50% versus conventional LFP block batteries, giving LFP — long criticized for low energy density — a competitive package.

In nail-penetration tests the Blade Battery emitted no smoke or fire and stayed at 30–60°C, while a ternary lithium cell exceeded 500°C and burned; crush, bending, 300°C furnace and 260% overcharge tests also passed. The Han EV, launched June 2020 with a 605 km range, was the first car to carry it.

Korean trade press later described the pack as breaking LFP's energy-density limits through manufacturing-process innovation rather than chemistry.
