Bosch's ESP braked one wheel at a time and turned skids into routine driving

ESP compares steering intent with the car's actual yaw 25 times a second and brakes individual wheels; EU cars have required it since 2014.

The solution

Skids happen when a car's actual path diverges from where the driver is steering, and few drivers can recover. ABS stopped wheels locking, but the car could still spin in a curve or during a swerve.

Bosch engineer Anton van Zanten began working on a stability system in the 1980s; the key was a yaw-rate sensor and a control loop that checks steering intent against the car's rotation 25 times per second, cutting engine torque and braking individual wheels to restore the intended path. In May 1995 the Mercedes S 600 Coupé became the first production car with ESP standard.

The breakthrough came from a failure: in 1997 a Mercedes A-Class tipped over in a Swedish 'moose test', and Mercedes took the car off the market and relaunched it with ESP standard. Bosch has since built over 250 million ESP systems, and its accident research credits the system with saving more than 15,000 lives and preventing about 500,000 accidents in Europe.

When people can't execute the maneuver, don't train them harder — add a loop that compares intent with outcome and corrects at the actuator; make the invisible safety feature standard.

Aftermath

ESP spread from luxury cars to every class, and regulators in the EU, US, Japan, Australia and elsewhere made stability control mandatory; the EU required it on all new cars from November 2014. It became the foundation for later driver-assistance systems, and van Zanten received the European Inventor Award in 2016.
