VW's one-platform bet: MQB/SSP lets every brand share parts and saves billions
Volkswagen shrank four car platforms toward one architecture so Golf, Audi, Skoda and Seat reuse identical parts.

By the 2010s Volkswagen Group ran four separate car platforms—MQB and MLB for combustion cars, MEB and PPE for electrics—each with its own development, tooling and plants. The modular approach already let Golf, Audi A3, Skoda and Seat derivatives share a common architecture. In 2021 the group announced it would compress all four into a single Scalable Systems Platform.
Handelsblatt reported that platform standardization lets automakers save billions, noting Volkswagen had perfected the shared-parts approach across its brands. First SSP-based cars were expected from 2024, with a full rollout across all vehicle classes by the end of the decade as combustion models phase out.
The logic is Lego-like: identical parts build very different cars. Skoda's 2021 press release shows the delegation in action—Skoda took worldwide responsibility for the MQB-A0 Global platform that underpins entry models of both Skoda and Volkswagen, after first adapting it for India.
