ANA's SOS optimizer re-matches aircraft to bookings as demand drifts

Airlines assign aircraft types to routes months ahead, but bookings drift with prices, entertainment trends and tourism. When demand no longer matches the planned plane, revenue leaks.

ANA built the swapper optimization suite (SOS) to fix that near-term mismatch. It combines unconstrained revenue expectations, current fares, schedule and fleet data and operational constraints — crews, maintenance, customer service — to propose optimal swaps of flight legs among equipment types.

The tool determines both feasibility and profitability of each swap, and was integrated on top of ANA's existing fleet-assignment model. Benefits included fast response, minimal human intervention and a high acceptance rate of proposed swaps, with ¥339 million in benefits in July 2017 alone.

ANA is Japan's largest airline, with roughly 260 aircraft on 85 international and 119 domestic routes; the paper describing SOS won the IISE Outstanding Innovation in Service Systems Engineering Award.
