Tennessee's tourism board, working with VML and a dozen Nashville songwriters including Dolly Parton, rewrote the alt text on TNVacation.com as song lyrics, turning a legally-mandated accessibility checkbox into content sighted visitors seek out too

Alt text for blind users is a flat legal checkbox nobody enjoys
背景
Web accessibility law requires alt text so screen readers can describe images to blind and low-vision users. In practice nearly every organization treats this as pure compliance overhead: a flat, literal caption like 'image of a lake at sunset' written by whoever is cheapest, read once by a screen reader and never thought about again. The requirement exists to avoid legal exposure, not to communicate anything worth hearing.
Tennessee's tourism website, TNVacation.com, faced the same obligation for its landscape and destination photography. Rather than outsource the task to a compliance vendor, the state's tourism department and its agency VML treated the alt text itself as the creative brief — asking what accessibility could look like if it were written by people who write for a living, for an audience whose only channel into the image is language.
换别人会怎么做
The standard approach to alt text was to outsource it to whoever was cheapest, writing flat literal captions like 'image of a lake at sunset,' the minimum needed to satisfy legal accessibility requirements and avoid liability, since alt text is read once by a screen reader and otherwise invisible to the site's majority sighted audience.
他们看到了什么
Tennessee's tourism department saw that alt text, unlike almost every other piece of website content, is written specifically for an audience whose only channel into an image is language itself, which meant the requirement wasn't inherently a flat compliance checkbox, it had simply always been treated as one by writers who didn't invest real craft in it. Rather than continuing to outsource the task to a compliance vendor producing literal captions, they brought in professional songwriters to treat the alt text itself as the creative brief, recognizing that accessibility content written with genuine skill could become something worth encountering, not just something legally required to exist.
那一手
The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development and agency VML recruited about a dozen Tennessee songwriters — including Dolly Parton, Kix Brooks, and blind singer-songwriter JP Williams — to co-write the alt text for images on TNVacation.com as lyrical, sensory verse instead of flat literal captions, so screen-reader users encounter narrative and music rather than a checkbox description ('Sound Sites', launched April 2025).
为什么管用
Recruiting working songwriters, including recognizable names like Dolly Parton, to write lyrical, sensory verse as alt text meant blind and low-vision users encountered genuine narrative and musicality instead of the flat literal description every other tourism site offered, converting a purely defensive legal requirement into content with real standalone value for its actual audience. Because sighted users don't normally encounter alt text at all, the project's differentiation came almost entirely from investing craft into a channel competitors treated as worthless, letting Tennessee earn disability-advocacy press coverage, a Fast Company Innovation by Design Award, and a reusable public toolkit, essentially free marketing and reputational upside from fully executing an obligation every competitor was already legally required to have but chose to do at the lowest possible bar. The approach also cost relatively little beyond songwriter time, since it required no new technology or infrastructure, only better writing applied to text the site needed to produce regardless.
值了多少
The project produced hundreds of songs of alt-text verse across the site, drew enthusiastic feedback from blind and low-vision users and disability-advocacy press, and won a 2025 Fast Company Innovation by Design Award in the accessibility category; VML has since published a public toolkit to help other tourism boards write emotionally rich alt text. Honest caveat: no publisher has released hard traffic, conversion, or screen-reader-session numbers — the documented evidence is qualitative acclaim and one juried award, not measured engagement lift.
什么时候会失灵
The mechanism depends on the underlying compliance requirement genuinely being a content opportunity and not merely a technical or legal formality with no audience-facing value to unlock — some compliance requirements (data retention logs, certain disclosure statements) have no equivalent creative dimension to invest in, and treating every checkbox requirement as a hidden content opportunity would waste effort on ones that aren't. It also depends on the more elaborate content still actually serving its core accessibility function well; alt text written primarily for lyrical impact risks losing the clear, functional image description screen-reader users fundamentally need, meaning craft has to enhance rather than compromise the requirement's original purpose. And the case's own honest disclosure, that no publisher released hard traffic, conversion or screen-reader-session numbers, is a reminder that qualitative acclaim and a design award are not the same as measured proof the approach drove business outcomes, meaning the model's creative and reputational value is better established here than its direct commercial return.
后来呢
Tennessee is folding Sound Sites into its next full site redesign, and VML is positioning the approach as a reusable accessibility-as-content model for other destination marketers.
