The SeaFold container folds five-into-one so empty boxes stop shipping air
A foldable 40ft container lets five collapsed boxes occupy one slot, cutting empty-container repositioning costs by up to 56%.

More than 20% of boxes are brought back to their port of origin empty, and every one of those trips carries a full-size container just to return air. The standard fix has been to route empty containers more cleverly, but the box itself still takes up a full slot.
Compact Container Systems instead made the box smaller when it is empty. The SeaFold HC 40' folds, so five collapsed containers fit in the slot of one standard 40-foot container, and it needs no special port equipment to do it. Tests suggested a 56% cut in repositioning cost, up to 80% less storage space and up to 70% lower emissions.
The trade-off is that the container is more complex and costs more, but the empty mileage it saves compounds across the fleet. On a Los Angeles-to-Shanghai route, five collapsed SeaFold containers in one slot achieved a 69% reduction in metric tons of CO2 versus five conventional containers.

The SeaFold container was certified by Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, ISO and the UIC, and launched as a world-first in 2024. Its economics depend on the volume of empty repositioning on a route, so it is most valuable where that share is high, but it reframed the empty-container problem as a design problem and not just a routing one.
