LEGO taught braille without building a separate braille product

背景
Braille literacy among blind and visually impaired children has been declining for decades in many countries as audio technology substitutes for tactile reading, and the standard learning tools — braille slates, dedicated braille-teaching kits — are specialized, often institutional products, disconnected from the ordinary toys sighted classmates and siblings play with. A child learning braille this way learns it apart from play, using a tool nobody else in the room is also using, which is both a smaller market that struggles to fund product development and a subtly isolating experience for the child.
The Danish Association of the Blind first proposed the idea to the LEGO Foundation in 2011, and the Dorina Nowill Foundation for the Blind in Brazil raised it again in 2017; the eventual answer wasn't a new braille-teaching product, but bricks molded so the arrangement of studs on top of an otherwise standard LEGO brick corresponds to a letter or number in braille, with the same character printed on top for sighted users to read simultaneously.

Because the underlying cost structure was an adaptation of existing tooling rather than new product development from scratch, LEGO could distribute the toolkits free of charge to schools and organizations rather than needing to recoup a separate product line's development cost through sales, which is likely why the rollout scaled to seven countries at launch with thirteen more planned within six months rather than remaining a small pilot.

This mechanism depends on the underlying platform genuinely being adaptable to the accessibility need without compromising its core function for the mainstream audience — LEGO bricks happened to have exactly the right physical properties (discrete studs, a surface that could carry both raised bumps and printed text) to encode braille without becoming a worse LEGO brick, but not every mainstream product has an equivalent structural affordance for every disability need. It also depends on genuine, sustained input from the affected community throughout development — this project originated from the Danish Association of the Blind's 2011 proposal and the Dorina Nowill Foundation's 2017 follow-up, and was pilot-tested with blind community input over nearly two years, which is what let LEGO be confident the adapted product actually served the need rather than merely appearing inclusive.
