ECT automated its container terminal, cutting a crane team from eight to three.
To keep Sea-Land, ECT built the world's first robotised terminal, with driverless AGVs and automated stacking cranes running the loop day and night.

In 1983 ECT, a Rotterdam terminal operator, handled more than a million containers for the first time, but rising wages and the sharp swings of tidal shipping and peak seasons made labour the bottleneck. Its director Gerrit Wormmeester saw automation as the way to smooth peaks and troughs.
The chance to prove it came when the contract with Sea-Land, ECT's largest customer, approached renewal and rival European ports tried to lure the line away. Rather than compete on price, ECT proposed a completely automated terminal and Sea-Land accepted, signing in 1988 with five years to build it.
Neither automated guided vehicles nor practical automated stacking cranes existed, so ECT had to invent them alongside the control software. On June 25, 1993 Queen Beatrix opened the Delta/Sea-Land Terminal, the first automated container terminal in the world.
The payoff was structural: a crane team at the automated terminal had three people where a conventional one used eight, and the machines kept running around the clock. Positioned at the Maasvlakte, the terminal changed how the industry thought about container handling.

- Fewer people per crane cuts wage cost, which is the largest variable cost in a high-volume terminal.
- A fixed machine rhythm absorbs demand peaks and troughs without overtime or layoffs.
- The design won the customer by offering a better capability rather than a lower price.

后来呢
The Delta/Sea-Land terminal became the model for automated container terminals, and by the 2020s more than 1,100 driverless stacking cranes and dozens of automated terminals were operating worldwide. ECT automated its other terminals and the principle spread to big hub ports, though automation also shifted work from physical loading to supervision and control.
