Cookpad turned housewives' unwritten recipes into Japan's searchable recipe library

Japan's first user-generated recipe site (1998) made mothers' cooking searchable — free UGC, ads and a low-cost premium hit 62.7M monthly users before video ate

Cookpad

那一手

On 1 October 1997 Yoko Sano founded Kokin (today Cookpad Inc.) in Fujisawa, Kanagawa; in March 1998 he launched kitchen@coin, Japan's first user-submitted recipe site, renamed Cookpad in June 1999. Advertising began in 2002, a freemium premium tier in September 2004 (~¥280–308/month class), a Mothers listing on 17 July 2009, and promotion to the First Section in 2011.

The peak coincided with Japan's search era: monthly users 50.33M (Oct 2014) to 62.69M at home plus 23.18M overseas (Feb 2016); revenue ¥13.4B with ¥5.4B operating profit (FY2017) on 30–48% operating margins; paid members peaked at 2.048M (Mar 2018) and 5M recipes existed worldwide by November 2018.

The decline was equally instructive: a first annual loss in 2020 and an operating loss of ¥3.5B on ¥9.1B revenue (FY2021); in 2023 the company cut 120 staff (~30% of 409) and six ventures; Sano returned as CEO in October 2023 after eleven years. FY2024 produced net profit of ¥1.332B (on revenue down 22.8%), but FY2025 revenue fell further (¥5.3B, −9.2%); paid members slipped to 1.307M by September 2025 (−36% from peak) and the stock traded near ¥150 against a ¥2,880 high — still listed in 2026.

为什么管用

  • Content aggregation with zero creator cost, plus search-engine scale, built a library no publisher could match — the SEO moat was then monetized with ads and a cheap premium tier.
  • The library was both moat and trap: when recipes moved to video and ChatGPT, the text archive's search lock-in evaporated — and over-monetization (2014 search limits) had estranged the free users who
值了多少User content built an unmatched library.聪明

可以搬走什么

User-generated content plus search can out-compile any publisher — but the archive is the cast: if the format migrates (video, AI), the moat moves, and monetizing search too hard starves contributors.

后来呢

Cookpad shrank from Japan's recipe king (62.7M monthly users, 2.05M paid) to a turnaround case: FY2017 sales of ¥13.4B fell to ¥5.3B by FY2025, members to 1.31M, and the share price from ¥2,880 to ~¥150 — still listed under its founder in 2026, a canonical case of format disruption beating content aggregation.
