Meesho turned homemakers' WhatsApp networks into India's social marketplace
Meesho made homemakers resellers forwarding WhatsApp links with zero inventory; social graphs became free acquisition, and 0% commission beat the giants.
Meesho
那一手
Meesho was founded in December 2015 by IIT-Delhi alumni Vidit Aatrey and Sanjeev Barnwal (Y Combinator W16). A 2016 TechCrunch report captured the original pain: over 100 million Indians already traded over WhatsApp, but sellers had no catalogues, search, payments or shipping tools, and their customers lived outside what Amazon and Flipkart served. Meesho's answer was the reseller model — anyone could forward a product link, get the order fulfilled by the platform, and pocket a margin.
The contrarian move came in July 2021: Meesho announced India's first zero-commission marketplace — 'We are the first e-commerce company in the country to introduce zero percent commission for our sellers'. Revenue shifted to advertising, logistics (its Valmo platform handles over half of orders) and seller tools. Orders skewed cash-on-delivery (75% in FY25) and tiny tickets — a low-income customer base the incumbents struggled to serve profitably.
The numbers validated the model. FY24 revenue was ₹7,615cr (+33%) with an ESOP-adjusted loss of just ₹53cr (-97%), operating cash flow positive, 843 million orders and 145 million annual transacting users. FY25 revenue reached ₹9,389.9cr with 1.59 billion orders; the company is debt-free with ₹5,700cr cash. By June 2023 Meesho was the fastest shopping app ever to cross 500 million downloads, and in November 2025 SEBI cleared its IPO.
为什么管用
- Distribution was the bottleneck, not supply: handing the sales job to millions of trusted peers collapses acquisition cost toward zero and reaches buyers no ad campaign can.
- Zero commission is strategy, not charity: it pulls sellers in to build order density, then monetizes logistics and tools at scale — profit lives on the other side of volume.
可以搬走什么
When incumbents compete on commissions and subsidies, re-engineer who sells: put sales in the hands of millions of trusted peers and charge for the rails — logistics, ads, tools — not the transaction.
后来呢
Meesho became India's fastest-growing e-commerce challenger: FY25 revenue ₹9,389.9cr (+23%) with 1.59 billion orders and unit economics improving (cost per order down to ₹43.08); the FY25 net loss of ₹3,941.7cr included one-time US→India migration costs. SEBI cleared its ₹4,250cr fresh-issue IPO in November 2025 and it listed in December 2025, rising ~60% on day one. Meesho's social-commerce playbook is now being copied by WhatsApp-commerce startups across emerging markets.
