Chipotle found strangers who ordered the exact same meal and introduced them by email

A loyalty email scanned millions of transactions to match two people who'd ordered the identical burrito at the same time in different cities.

Chipotle

那一手

Chipotle Rewards had a large, growing base and a massive stream of transaction data, but most loyalty emails were routine. The brand and GALE wanted an email that people would actually want to forward.

They looked for a genuinely improbable coincidence: two complete strangers ordering the same customized burrito, at the same time, in different cities. That is the 'Doppelganger'.

An algorithm found those pairs and sent each a playful email telling them they'd been matched. The surprise — that their exact indulgence was simultaneously someone else's — was the hook, and the oddness made it land on TikTok.

The campaign turned raw purchase history into a socially shareable story, which is far more valuable than a standard CRM blast that no one repeats.

为什么管用

  • It used data the brand already owned but as a source of wonder, not just targeting.
  • The surprise is personal but generic enough that viewers recognize it, so it traveled.
  • It made the rewards data feel like a fun social utility rather than a sales channel.
  • It required no new consumer behavior — it just reframed what the brand already knew.

可以搬走什么

A rich store of transaction data is better used to find a human surprise worth forwarding than to push another discount.

后来呢

In the first six weeks more than 466,000 emails were sent, click-through rates ran 176% above benchmark, and the campaign generated about $4.8 million of incremental revenue. It won Gold in Creative Data at Cannes Lions 2023, and Chick-fil-A-style 'doppelganger' matchmaking became a common loyalty trick afterward.
