The world Hour Record — the furthest distance cycled in sixty minutes on a track — had stood since 1984 to Francesco Moser, an elite Italian professional with a decorated career who set his mark using two disc wheels, an aerofoil-tubed frame, Mexico City's high altitude, and blood transfusions (legal at the time). Attempting the record was understood as something only sponsored, internationally established professionals with serious equipment budgets would do.
Graeme Obree was a struggling amateur bike-shop owner in Ayrshire, Scotland, with no manufacturer backing, no engineering team, and no wind-tunnel access. Facing poor results from his shop in 1993, he decided to attempt the Hour Record anyway, building his own frame from scratch based on feel and trial and error rather than aerodynamic calculation. Needing a smoother, higher-quality bottom-bracket bearing than he could afford to buy, he pulled and adapted bearings from a washing machine after watching it spin — the detail that gave the bike, welded together from old BMX tubing his own bike-shop colleagues called 'pishrust tubing,' its name: Old Faithful.

On July 17, 1993, at the Hamar velodrome in Norway, Obree broke Moser's nine-year-old record, riding 51.596km in an hour against Moser's 51.151km — beating a professional with an elite career and a real equipment budget on a bike built from a washing machine and scrap tubing. The following year he broke the Hour Record again, and won two individual pursuit world championships using the Tuck position and its successor, 'Superman'; the UCI banned both positions after rival professionals began copying them, and in 2013, twenty years after Old Faithful, a 47-year-old Obree set a new world prone-cycling speed record on a hand-built recumbent bike called the Beastie, made in part from a saucepan and old roller-skate parts.

This only works when the resource being optimized (aerodynamic drag, in this case) has more than one independent lever affecting it, and the well-funded competitor has only exploited one of those levers -- if every available lever already requires capital, there's no free one left to find. It also has a shelf life once discovered: rival professionals copied the Tuck and Superman positions almost immediately, and the UCI banned both, showing that a costless innovation available to an underdog is equally available to funded competitors the moment they see it work, and a regulator can close the loophole outright once it becomes an accepted domain of competition.

Old Faithful is now permanently displayed at the National Museum of Scotland, and cycling media routinely cite Obree's Hour Record as the last time an amateur with a self-built machine could meaningfully compete with, and beat, professionals backed by full manufacturer sponsorship — a era the UCI's subsequent equipment and position regulations closed for good. His story was adapted into the 2006 film 'The Flying Scotsman,' and the UCI restored his stripped Superman-position titles in 2014.
