Zomato Gold sold dining discounts as a subscription—26,000 members in one day

Zomato charged ₹299–999 a year for 1+1 deals at 1,200 restaurants, flipping discount spend into upfront cash.

Zomato

the move

Zomato launched Zomato Gold in India in November 2017, a paid subscription giving members a complimentary dish or two-for-two drinks at more than 1,200 top-rated restaurants in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, after trials in the UAE and Portugal. Prices were ₹299 for three months or ₹999 for twelve, with one month free per referral and 25% off for new sign-ups.

The model monetized demand instead of spending on it. On launch day the app crossed 26,000 subscribers within 7–8 hours, selling at a rate of 40–60 subscriptions per minute and collecting an estimated ₹80 lakh to ₹2.7 crore in cash—before any of the dining perks were even used. By March 2018 it passed 150,000 subscribers, and prices were later raised as the service expanded.

For restaurants, Gold delivered pre-qualified customers willing to pay for the privilege of dining out, while Zomato held the subscription cash and the relationship. Founder Deepinder Goyal summarized the logic in one line: 'cashflow > revenue.'

why it works

  • Prepaid membership turns a marketing cost into upfront revenue
  • Referral bonuses made sign-up viral without paid acquisition
  • Restaurants carried the discount in exchange for volume
  • Zomato owned the member relationship and the data
the payoffSell the coupon book, collect cash upfrontclever

what transfers

If you must subsidize demand, package the subsidy as a paid membership—prepaid cash, viral referrals, and restaurants carry the discount.

what came after

Gold grew to millions of members, but restaurant associations pushed back over who bore the discounts, leading to a 2019 standoff and a redesigned membership that later became Zomato Pro. The subscription habit carried over into Zomato's broader ecosystem, including delivery perks.
