The solution
Luckin's 9.9-yuan war drove volume but capped profit, while Moutai, China's national liquor, kept failing to reach young consumers. Co-branding was everywhere in 2023, and 67% of young people had already lost interest in it — a normal tie-up would be noise.
The 酱香拿铁 made the collision itself the product: a 19-yuan latte built on real 53-degree Moutai, marketed as 'your first cup of Moutai.' The 'spend smart, feel rich' emotion rode the consumption-downgrade mood perfectly.
Douyin seeding turned it into a national event — 540,000+ user videos on day one, 5 billion plays over the campaign, stores selling out and systems crashing. Day-one sales hit 5.42M cups and over ¥100M, and Douyin alone sold 2.5M cups on launch day.
Why it worked
- Moutai's status made 19 yuan feel like a steal, matching the 'smart spend' mood
- Douyin seeding (540,000+ videos, 5B plays) turned news into purchase
- Real 53-degree Moutai in the recipe gave the claim substance skeptics verified
- Store scarcity and sell-outs amplified demand through FOMO
What can be applied
A co-brand works when each side solves the other's problem: the mass brand gets prestige, the prestige brand gets youth, and the product embodies both.
Aftermath
The latte won the 2024 Grand Effie (Greater China) and a 2024 金投赏 Gold; Douyin launch-day GMV topped ¥47M, Luckin's 5A audience assets grew by 180M people, and the playbook was reused across later product launches.
