Whitworth's 1841 thread standard made any nut fit any bolt in Britain

Whitworth's 1841 paper set one 55-degree thread form and pitch per diameter, so parts from different shops mated; railways adopted it as the national standard.

the move

In 1841 screw threads had no common standard: companies made their own pitches, so a bolt from one maker rarely matched a nut from another, and repairs meant re-cutting threads. Joseph Whitworth presented 'On an Uniform System of Screw Threads' to the Institution of Civil Engineers.

The paper defined one thread form, a 55-degree angle with rounded crests, and a table of pitches by diameter drawn from the best existing practice. It is recorded as the world's first national screw thread standard, later adopted as British Standard Whitworth.

Adoption compounded: British railways standardized on the thread, and mass production became possible because parts made in different shops fitted together. The Crimean War gunboat engines of 1855 were built by distributing one engine's parts across many machine shops, possible only because Whitworth's standards of measurement and accuracy were already established.

British Standard Whitworth dominated British engineering until metric standards replaced it in the twentieth century; its pipe-thread descendant, BSP, is still in use, and the 1841 paper is regarded as the ancestor of engineering standardization.
