Watt kept the cylinder hot by condensing steam in a separate vessel

James Watt's 1769 separate condenser split the hot and cold jobs, so a steam engine burned two-thirds less coal.

the move

The first practical steam engine, the Newcomen, condensed steam by spraying cold water into the cylinder that did the work. That threw away the heat that had just powered the piston, and it had to be reheated every stroke, so the engine burned a huge amount of coal to pump a small amount of water.

James Watt saw the contradiction: for fuel economy the working cylinder should stay as hot as it can, but for the steam to condense it must be cooled. In 1769 he patented 'a new method of lessening the consumption of steam and fuel in fire-engines' — a separate, always-cool vessel to do the condensing.

Now the hot cylinder never had to be cooled. The steam expanded there and then moved to the cold condenser to turn back to water, so the heat that did the work stayed put and only the waste heat left.

The saving was huge: engines with Watt's separate condenser burned about two-thirds less coal than the machines they replaced, which was the difference between an engine that could work anywhere and one that could only live beside a cheap coal mine.

  • Moving condensation to its own cool vessel lets each part do exactly one job without fighting the other.
  • The fuel saving was large enough to let the engine profitably power factories, mills and workshops, not just mine pumps.
  • It solved the engine's core inefficiency by re-designing where a step happens rather than pushing the machine harder.

The separate condenser, patented in 1769, made the steam engine the basis of the Industrial Revolution, letting power be delivered away from coal fields. Watt went on to patent the double-acting engine and rotative motion, and he and Matthew Boulton sold engines on the coal they saved rather than the machines themselves.
