Whisper turned the pickle jar into a pledge that broke India's period taboo

Whisper's film showed a girl defying the 'don't touch the pickle' myth; 2.9M women pledged, earning USD 6.1M media and lifting share of voice from 21% to 91%.

Whisper (P&G India)

The solution

A widely believed Indian myth said a menstruating woman must not touch the pickle jar, or the pickle would spoil — one branch of a taboo that barred women from kitchens and temples. Whisper's category had always sold protection; nobody addressed the shame itself.

BBDO India's 30-second film showed a teenage girl touching a pickle jar and declaring 'I touched the pickle jar'; a social push asked young women to pledge the same act, with celebrities, radio debates and a CNN-IBN show turning the topic into public conversation.

Pledging made defiance countable and shareable: over 2.9 million women pledged, the film passed 1.9 million YouTube views, and Whisper's category share of voice jumped from 21.0% to 91.2% with USD 6.1 million in earned media and 73% unaided recall.

It won the Glass Grand Prix at Cannes Lions 2015 — the jury praised work that takes on a gender issue 'in a very open and disruptive way' while staying rooted in the brand.

Why it worked

  • The pickle jar is a household object every Indian family knows, so the metaphor needed no explanation.
  • A pledge is a public commitment — each one became content that recruited more women.
  • The act was concrete and filmable, giving the taboo a face without lecturing anyone.
  • It tied a real social barrier to the brand's promise of confidence rather than to product function.

What can be applied

The strongest campaign insight is often the audience's own unspoken shame: name the prohibition, turn defiance into a countable public step, and the audience itself distributes the message.

Aftermath

The campaign's results became its own proof: 2.9 million pledges, USD 6.1 million in earned media, and a category share of voice that rose from 21% to 91.2%. It won the Glass Grand Prix at Cannes Lions 2015, and its metrics became the case-study numbers cited across the industry; Whisper kept building period-taboo work in the years that followed.
