Whisper wrote the missing chapter on periods into India's school books
Whisper turned the absence of period education into a literal missing chapter — 1m+ signatures, state curriculum changes, and a Media Abby Grand Prix.
Whisper (P&G India)
The solution
India's schoolgirls drop out at the onset of puberty: the campaign's starting point was that 23 million girls leave school then, because of missing period education and hygienic protection. Schools closing during the pandemic made the gap worse, with girls at home and no lessons at all.
Whisper had run school period-education programs for three decades. The 'Missing Chapter' campaign made the systemic gap tangible: period education was the chapter that never made it into school books. Whisper put its weight behind making that chapter real, using a petition to demand compulsory period education.
The integrated push worked on every level at once: a mobile e-learning platform drew more than 40 million visits in its first 20 days and educated over five million girls; more than a million signatures backed the call; and the campaign pledged education and pads to 25 million girls over three years.
The result was both social and commercial: the government committed to adding the missing chapter on periods to school books, and Whisper's offline business grew while the category declined — online sales up 2.3 times with 7.2 points of share gained. The work took a Media Abby Grand Prix at Goafest 2023 and a Cannes Bronze Lion.
Why it worked
- A missing chapter made an invisible systemic failure something anyone could point at.
- A petition turned passive viewers into active signatories with a concrete ask.
- The e-learning platform delivered education even while schools were closed.
- Backing a curriculum change let the brand fix the root cause, not just the symptom.
What can be applied
When the barrier is a social silence, name it as something concrete and fixable — a missing chapter — so people can sign, share and act on it instead of just feeling sad about it.
Aftermath
Beyond the award wins — Media Abby Grand Prix and Cannes Bronze Lion in 2023 — the campaign's policy effect endured: state governments committed to adding period education to school books, and Whisper's pledge to reach 25 million girls with education and pads over three years kept the school programs running. The campaign became a template for cause marketing that ends in changed institutions, not just changed minds.
