Taj Mahal Tea built a santoor the rain plays to celebrate monsoon

Ogilvy India built a rain-powered santoor at Vijayawada station: raindrops fill mallets that fall and strike strings, so the monsoon plays Raag Megh Malhar.

the move

Taj Mahal Tea had spent four decades linking itself to Indian classical music, but its marquee market of Vijayawada was stagnating. Ogilvy India's answer combined the brand's two cultural anchors: monsoon tea-drinking and the classical raag that celebrates rain.

Megh Santoor made the rain the artist. Each mallet of the giant santoor carried a rainwater container; as rain filled it, the mallet lifted, the water drained out, and the mallet fell to strike the strings. The varying intensity of the rain created a new rendition of Raag Megh Malhar every time it rained.

Placed at the busy Vijayawada Railway Station from August to October, the billboard performed for thousands of commuters while they sipped hot tea — turning a seasonal ritual into a live concert and the station itself into the venue.

why it works

  • Rain, tea and classical music were already woven into the audience's life.
  • Letting nature play the instrument made the campaign unrepeatable and genuinely live.
  • The railway station captured the exact tea-stall moment of monsoon culture.
  • The brand's 40-year music legacy gave the idea credibility no rival could copy.

what transfers

Marry the product ritual with a place and a moment the audience already lives; when nature performs the campaign, the medium is the message.

what came after

The installation ran through the monsoon months at Vijayawada Railway Station, giving the brand a marquee activation in a market that had been stagnant. Megh Santoor earned six finalist selections at the 2024 One Show and recognition at the London International Awards and Kyoorius, where juries highlighted its blend of cultural tradition, timing and craft.
