Vorwerk sells the €1,500 Thermomix through kitchen demos, not stores or ads
About 130,000 representatives cook in customers' homes; the premium mixer has no shelves, no TV campaign — and record sales.
Vorwerk (Thermomix)
the move
Vorwerk, a family company from Wuppertal founded in 1883, sells the Thermomix — a cooking machine launched in 1971 — exclusively through direct sales. There are no shelves in electronics stores and no TV-ad blitz; instead representatives bring the device into customers' kitchens.
The mechanism is the in-home demo: free 'experience cooking' sessions for groups, where guests taste, ask questions and watch the machine work. The seller is a trusted acquaintance rather than a shop assistant, and the demonstration itself creates the desire — analysts cite social proof, reciprocity and liking as the engines of the sales party.
It works at scale: about 130,000 advisors worldwide sold over 1.4 million Thermomix units in fiscal 2025, including more than a million of the new TM7, the most successful product launch in company history. Group revenue reached €3.6 billion, up 14%, with 70.6% of sales outside Germany.
why it works
- In-home demos justify a €1,549 price with experience
- No retail shelves means no direct price comparisons
- Social proof at cooking parties converts guests in groups
- Recipe subscriptions add recurring revenue around the device
what transfers
When a product needs demonstration to justify its price, build a distribution channel that demonstrates it — direct sales turns the pitch into an experience.
what came after
Thermomix became the world's best-selling premium kitchen machine and the driver of Vorwerk's record results; fiscal 2025 was a record year led by the TM7 launch, and the company added nine new countries to its direct-sales network.
