VW sells 30,000 deposits of an electric car nobody has seen
After Dieselgate, VW's 'For The Many, Not The Few' made the unseen ID.3 the most-searched e-mobility brand ahead of Tesla, and took 30,000 deposits.

the move
Volkswagen's own name means 'the people's car', and it wanted the new ID.3 to bring e-mobility to the many rather than a privileged few. But it was ranked only 17th in European EV leadership, rival Tesla dominated the conversation, and a Dieselgate trust deficit meant people did not believe Volkswagen's tech promise.
The agencies chose to make a virtue of what they could not do. Because the car was not yet revealed, they could not show it, so the whole campaign sold the idea. A broad 'fame' tier used city takeovers and an emotional manifesto to reframe e-mobility as accessible and democratised, while a 'persuasion' tier worked in narrow interest-based media to build specific proof points and nudge people toward ordering.
A dedicated 'ID Hub' on the Volkswagen site explained how an EV fits daily life and answered objections, letting the brand harvest prospects and refine its message continuously. The campaign leaned on the tension between reaching everyone and convincing a few, so the same thought appeared both mass and niche, and the unshown car became the object of curiosity rather than doubt.
why it works
- Not being able to show the car forced the campaign to sell a feeling, which was the real barrier.
- A universal manifesto fixed the trust deficit by framing e-mobility as for everyone.
- Narrow interest media and the ID Hub produced qualified prospects rather than noise.
- The central thought rooted every execution in access, which matched the brand's name.
what transfers
When the product is unseen and trust is low, sell the promise and the feeling of access, honestly, and it can still generate demand.
what came after
The campaign generated 30,000 deposits of roughly 1,000 euros ahead of the car's unveiling at the IAA in Frankfurt, and lifted Volkswagen to the number one most-searched brand in the e-mobility space, ahead of Tesla for the first time. The work was shortlisted at the Effie Awards Europe 2020 and won the Automotive category at the World Media Awards, and set the template for launching an unseen product on promise.
