In July 2025 Volkswagen Canada, official automotive partner of the 50th Toronto International Film Festival, launched Buzzcodes with Type1, WPP's bespoke VW agency, and media by Touche!. The idea: every Volkswagen that has appeared in a film or TV show over the past 70 years has a visible license plate, and each of those plate numbers is now a promo code.

To play, fans post the name of any movie or show featuring a VW together with the plate number they spotted, tagging #Buzzcode and @VWCanada. The first person to find each code unlocks VW merchandise, and every entrant goes into a draw for a VIP TIFF opening-night experience: the red carpet, two premiere tickets and entry to the after-party. @VWCanada also posted custom plates weekly as visual clues.

The campaign ran on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Threads and X until the end of August, backed by paid social, creator content, digital boards and pre-roll spots before every screening at the TIFF Lightbox, where a fleet of ID. Buzz shuttles carried talent during the festival. Marketing director Lynne Piette told Media in Canada the media spend was comparable to other social-first VW activations.

The frame tied the retro Microbus stardom to the new electric ID. Buzz: borrowing the stardom of the vehicle that inspired it to cast the EV as today's cultural icon.

Its old cars' screen license plates became the promo codes

Placement is usually bought one film at a time; the back catalog of 70 years of unpaid VW cameos was a media asset sitting there free.

First-to-find mechanics create urgency and rarity without inventing new inventory - each plate is naturally unique.

Fans do the searching inside streaming platforms and their own collections, so earned reach replaces paid impressions.

Anchoring the game to TIFF gave it a prize worth wanting and press worth earning during the festival's 50th edition.

A brand with a long screen history owns buried treasure it never paid to place. Legacy cameos become collectible codes: scarcity supplies urgency, fans supply the media.

The activation ran through the end of August 2025 and carried into the festival itself on September 4-14, with ID. Buzz vehicles on red carpets and branded screens at the TIFF Lightbox. The work was Shortlisted in Direct at Cannes Lions 2026.
