The majority of women in small-town and rural India have no bank account of their own, even when their households are otherwise served by the formal banking system — a 2022 estimate put the figure at roughly 80% in the demographic Ujjivan Small Finance Bank was trying to reach.
Indian weddings carry an existing, near-universal financial ritual that already puts cash directly into a woman's hands: the 'shagun,' a cash gift given at weddings and other occasions, traditionally presented inside a decorated envelope called a 'lifafa,' by custom always including a one-rupee coin for good fortune. Millions of these envelopes changed hands every wedding season already, entirely outside any bank's reach.
Redesigned the shagun envelope to double as an account-opening form, so a bride could open an account with its one-rupee coin as first deposit, without seeking a bank.
The shagun envelope is a trusted, familiar object that already puts cash into women's hands.
By making the envelope the form, women never had to seek out or trust the bank first.
The one-rupee coin inside served as a natural first deposit, completing the account opening.
Distribution through existing gift shops meant the envelopes reached women without new channels.
Embed your onboarding into a trusted ritual object the user already handles, rather than simplifying your own form.
The campaign drove 232,000 additional bank accounts opened in its first year, using an object that required no separate trust-building because the trust already existed in the ritual itself. It won a Gold Lion at Cannes Lions 2022 in Creative Commerce, plus a Clio Grand Award for Cultural Experiences and further Clio Gold and Bronze awards in 2023.
