Tata Steel optimized its annealing line, cutting fuel 8% per tonne.

With IIT Bombay, Tata Steel built an optimizer for continuous annealing that raised premium-product quality 20% and cut fuel and CO2 by 8% per tonne.

Continuous annealing is essential to controlling the quality of cold-rolled steel strips. Running the line well is a complex multi-variable problem, since the strip's properties depend on a precise sequence of heating, holding and cooling.

Tata Steel, with academic consultant IIT Bombay, applied operations research and analytics to digitally transform the continuous annealing process in its most value-added stream. The optimization reads the in-process state and drives the heat-treatment settings to the target product properties using the least fuel.

The result was an 8% reduction in specific fuel consumption and CO2 per tonne of steel — worth about $2.5 million a year and 10,000 tonnes of CO2 — plus a 20% improvement in premium-product quality.

The project was named a 2024 Franz Edelman Award finalist and Tata Steel and IIT Bombay were inducted into the Franz Edelman Academy. Tata Steel continued to expand analytics across its process operations, aligning with its net-zero carbon goal for 2045.
