Maersk's Triple-E made the big ship slower, cutting fuel and CO2 per box.

Bigger ships chased speed; Maersk slowed the Triple-E to 19 knots, adding long-stroke engines and waste-heat recovery to cut fuel 37% and CO2 per box 50%.

the move

Container lines had long competed by building bigger and faster ships, but fuel was the largest controllable cost and growing. For years the sea trade also faced pressure to cut emissions, with shipping alone responsible for roughly 3% of global emissions.

In February 2011 Maersk ordered the design that became the Triple-E, and in June 2013 the first ship was named at a ceremony in South Korea. The class can carry about 18,000 to 18,270 twenty-foot containers and is 400 metres long and about 59 metres wide.

Instead of adding horsepower, the design slows down. Twin ultra-long-stroke engines drive two propellers at a design speed around 19 knots, and a waste-heat recovery system turns exhaust energy into propulsion power. Maersk said this cuts fuel consumption by roughly 37% and CO2 per container moved by about 50% versus the Asia-Europe average.

The point was not to be the fastest but to be the cheapest per box. Cargo arrives a little later, but each container costs less to move and produces far less carbon, which is what turns a bigger ship into a better business.

The Triple-E class became a symbol of the shift in container shipping toward efficiency and emissions cuts, and the industry followed with larger, slower, greener vessels. Slow steaming became a standard response to volatile fuel prices and carbon rules. The lesson that unit cost, not headline speed, is the real lever reshaped how container lines designed and deployed fleets.
