Tastien's hand-stretched buns made a Chinese 'hamburger' chain of 11,000 stores

A Nanchang pizza flop pivoted to freshly hand-rolled buns, China-style fillings and franchise scale—11,124 stores by 2025.

Tastien (塔斯汀)

the move

Wei Youchun ran Wallace franchises in 2011–2013, learning the down-market-plus-franchise playbook, and founded Tastien in Nanchang in 2012. Early pizza attempts flopped. In 2018 the brand introduced a hand-stretched, oven-baked bun, and a year later locked the 'Chinese hamburger' positioning—fresh craft, guochao style and low price versus the Western giants.

The franchise engine did the scaling: 2020 saw the system open nationwide, and in 2021–2023 the chain added more than 6,000 stores, with over 3,700 added in 2023 alone. By November 2025 the official count was 11,124 operating stores across 300+ cities, making it one of only a few Chinese fast-food brands past 10,000 stores.

The economics favor franchisees and the group alike: a 65-square-metre standard store needs about ¥700,000–800,000 initial investment versus ¥1 million-plus for McDonald's or KFC, while the average ticket of ¥18.28 sits far below KFC's ¥30.89 and McDonald's ¥27.68. Visible hand-rolling in open kitchens supplies the freshness and theater.

why it works

  • Hand-stretched buns are visible craft competitors can't automate cheaply
  • 'Chinese hamburger' turns familiarity into a category of its own
  • Half-price tickets opened down-market cities the giants underserve
  • Franchise economics let the network scale without heavy capital
the payoffMake the bun the theater: fresh, visible, Chineseclever

what transfers

In fast food, visible craft at a discount creates a category wedge that standardization cannot match—then franchise economics carry the scale.

what came after

Store density and franchisee profitability became the next test: protection distance shrank, some franchisees saw payback stretch from 12 to 24 months, and the brand faced questions about expansion quality even as it entered top-tier cities like Beijing and Guangzhou.
