Qian Da Ma's hourly evening discounts guarantee fresh food is never sold overnight

From 7pm prices fall one notch every half hour until 11:30pm gives stock away — spoilage dropped below 5%, and China's top fresh chain was born.

Qian Da Ma (钱大妈)

the move

Qian Da Ma built China's leading community fresh-food chain on a single rule: no overnight meat. Stores discount in fixed steps from 19:00 — 10% off, then another 10% every half hour — until leftovers are given away free at 23:30.

The scheduled cascade converts spoilage risk into customer traffic. Shoppers time their visits to the deepening discounts, so the store clears nearly everything daily; spoilage runs below 5%, against a 15-30% industry range. Behind the stores, a vertical supply chain — 16 warehouses, over 800 cold-chain trucks and a 200-person IT team — keeps most produce turning within 12 hours.

The model made Qian Da Ma the No.1 community fresh chain by GMV for five straight years (2020-2024), with 2024 GMV of 14.8 billion yuan and 2,938 stores by September 2025. But the same discount curve squeezes franchisee margins, and the chain shrank from a peak of more than 3,700 stores.

why it works

  • A fixed discount schedule makes freshness a verifiable promise
  • Evening discount hunters clear stock without a markdown team
  • Low spoilage lets the chain undercut traditional wet markets
  • Standardized day-clear rules simplify franchisee ordering

what transfers

Perishables don't need mystery markdowns: publish a fixed discount schedule and the discount itself becomes the demand driver.

what came after

After peaking at over 3,700 stores in 2020-21, the network fell to 2,938 by September 2025, with 98.6% franchise-run and most revenue coming from selling goods to franchisees. Qian Da Ma filed for a Hong Kong IPO in January 2026, facing competition from instant-retail giants and questions about whether the day-clear model can leave southern China.
