The Rhine turned into Europe's container corridor by putting boxes on barges

Container barges on the Rhine have grown steadily since 1980, turning an old waterway into Europe's inland container artery.

The solution

By the 1980s, moving containers from the port of Rotterdam into Europe's industrial hinterland meant trucks on congested roads or a limited rail system. The Rhine offered a third option that had been moving goods for centuries: barges.

The container made the waterway newly relevant. A barge can carry hundreds of boxes with a small crew, and because every box is the same standard size, it transfers between ocean ship, river barge, train and truck without being re-handled. Barge shuttles linked Rotterdam and Antwerp with inland terminals along the Rhine, and the mode's market share has grown steadily since 1980 at the expense of road and rail.

The inland port of Duisburg became the hub of the system, handling millions of TEU a year as the world's largest inland container port. Its Logport VI terminal is a dedicated tri-modal barge terminal where containers connect the Rhine with railways and roads, with more than 50,000 TEU a year shifted to barges to relieve bottlenecks.

Aftermath

Container barging is now a permanent layer of European logistics, with Duisburg handling over four million TEU a year and dedicated barge terminals such as Logport VI expanding capacity. The same model spread to other rivers, and barge corridors are treated as critical infrastructure for relieving highway and rail congestion.
