CargoBeamer slides up to 38 semi-trailers onto a train in about 20 minutes — no cranes, no lifting points, nine times faster than a crane terminal.

The solution
Rail intermodal for road trailers usually means reach stackers lifting each trailer one at a time, which is slow and requires trailers with crane lifting points. CargoBeamer redesigned the transfer itself: trailers are placed on loading baskets, and patented wagons slide all of them horizontally onto the train at once.
The first testing terminal opened in Leipzig in 2010, and the first full public terminal opened in Calais in July 2021. Breakbulk reports that the Kaldenkirchen terminal in Germany is now being equipped with the technology and will handle all trailer types through fully automated horizontal loading — up to 38 trailers per train in about 20 minutes, roughly nine times faster than crane terminals.
Wikipedia records the service record: 20 weekly roundtrips between Kaldenkirchen and Domodossola, over 64,000 semi-trailers carried between 2015 and 2020, and nearly 18,000 tonnes of CO2 saved versus road on 636 million tonne-kilometres, with utilization above 87%.
Why it worked
- Parallel horizontal transfer removes the serial crane bottleneck.
- No lifting points means every trailer qualifies, widening the market.
- Drivers and tractors are freed — they do not ride the train.
- Fixed infrastructure pays off on high-frequency corridors.
What can be applied
If the bottleneck is a slow serial operation, redesign the operation to happen in parallel — remove the constraint instead of buying more of it.
Aftermath
CargoBeamer plans to triple Kaldenkirchen capacity to over 200,000 units by 2027 and to build up to 18 terminals and 50 routes; it has raised over EUR 200 million, and its volumes grew 39% in its most recent reporting period while the European intermodal market shrank about 14%. It now runs trains across Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Romania.
