New York financiers built a 47-mile Panama railroad to capture gold-rush traffic

Completed in 1855, the Panama Railroad cut the isthmus crossing from a mule-and-canoe ordeal to hours — the first transcontinental railroad in the Americas.

The solution

The California gold rush created a vast traffic problem: passengers and gold had to sail months around Cape Horn, or cross Panama by dugout canoe up the Chagres River and mule trail over the divide. The isthmus was the bottleneck — the shortest route between two oceans, and the slowest part of the journey.

New York financiers chartered the Panama Railroad Company, broke ground in December 1850, and spent five years driving 47 miles of single track through jungle and disease. On January 27-28, 1855, the final spike went in at Culebra and the first train crossed the isthmus — the first transcontinental railroad in the Americas.

The line cut the isthmus crossing to a few hours, and steamships connected its ends. Between 1848 and 1869 about 600,000 passengers used the Panama route, with more than 46,000 in the peak year of 1859; more than three-quarters of a billion dollars in coined gold crossed eastbound, nearly $48 million in 1864 alone.

Aftermath

The Panama Railroad's traffic declined after the first U.S. transcontinental railroad opened in 1869, yet the line itself kept operating and the isthmus corridor it proved remained central to inter-ocean transport.
