Neeman's shouted its brand at smartphones so always-listening phones served its ads
Two influencers wearing Neeman's shoes shouted 'Are those Neeman's?' across India, and nearby smartphones did the rest — serving Instagram ads to their owners.
Neeman's · VML India
The solution
Neeman's, a digital-first Indian footwear brand, needed awareness on a tight budget — the kind of brief where agencies reach for cheap social ads. VML India's chief creative officer Mukund Olety noticed the mechanism everyone complains about: phones listen, and minutes after you mention something, an ad for it appears. The team decided to weaponise it instead of fight it.
The idea began in January 2024 and launched in May as 'Are Those Neeman's Shoes Phone Hack'. Two micro-influencers dressed in Neeman's shoes toured busy locations across India, enthusiastically shouting 'Are those Neeman's shoes?' — loud enough to be captured not just by nearby people but by their always-listening phones.
Those captured phrases matched Neeman's campaign keywords, so the platform's voice-data targeting began serving Neeman's Instagram ads to the very phones that had 'heard' the question, while the odd spectacle earned organic attention of its own. The results were measurable: a 19% uplift in Google brand searches and a strong increase in organic website sessions.
At Goafest 2025 the campaign won the Abby Grand Prix in the Audio – Voice Activation category, a vote for a low-budget guerrilla idea that turned an infrastructure users distrust into free media.
Why it worked
- It converts an annoyance users can't escape — always-listening phones — into earned media
- The mechanism is self-amplifying: every phone that hears the phrase becomes a channel
- It fits a tight budget by spending on people and movement rather than bought impressions
- Measurable outcomes, a 19% search uplift and organic traffic growth, prove it wasn't just a stunt
What can be applied
If everyone around you owns an always-listening microphone, the cheapest media buy is a phrase: say the brand out loud where phones can hear, and let the platform's own ad system carry your message.
Aftermath
After the initial run, Neeman's and VML said they planned to take the stunt to more cities, and the campaign became a cited example of guerrilla media at Goafest 2025, where it won the Abby Grand Prix in the Audio – Voice Activation category. The measurable 19% lift in brand searches plus strong organic sessions gave agencies a low-budget template for making voice-data targeting work for a brand instead of against it, and the campaign entered Indian advertising case-study coverage as one of the year's most inventive uses of a cheap production model.
