India banned single-use plastics, yet the crisis kept growing — about 9.4 million tons of plastic waste a year. The Times of India, the country's largest English newspaper, wanted to make readers feel the harm rather than read another statistic.

Working with VML Mumbai / Wunderman Thompson Mumbai and Illusion CGI Studio, the 'Unplastic India' campaign launched on World Environment Day, 5 June 2023. Its 'Seal Alarm' print and poster series rendered a baby seal, a baby turtle and a baby penguin squeezed into the shape of twisted plastic bottles — with no preaching copy, leaving the conclusion to the reader.

The name works on two levels: the tamper 'seal' you crack when opening a bottle, and the animal. Opening plastic is reframed from a harmless reflex into the instant an alarm goes off for marine life.

The campaign launched with a sand installation by artist Sudarsan Pattnaik on Puri Beach, Odisha, built from 2,320 plastic bottles collected from local beaches, and asked readers to sign a pledge to eliminate single-use plastic.

The crack of a bottle's seal is the creature's alarm

It converts an invisible, distant consequence into the exact physical gesture that causes it — opening a bottle.

The wordplay on 'seal' makes the idea self-explanatory across a multilingual country without long copy.

Open-ended images with no preaching text let readers reach the verdict themselves, which persuades harder.

A pledge mechanic turned shock into a measurable commitment rather than momentary guilt.

Don't lecture with numbers; find the everyday gesture that causes the harm and make the gesture itself the image of the victim.

Over 5 million people signed the pledge to eliminate single-use plastic. The series won the Print & Publishing Grand Prix at Spikes Asia in March 2024, along with further recognition at D&AD and the Kyoorius Creative Awards, and became the flagship of the Times of India's ongoing Unplastic India platform.
