The solution
McDonald's Switzerland sells a large share of its deals through unaddressed coupon flyers — the McDeals Weeks promotion offers up to 50% off via flyer or app. In German-speaking Switzerland that channel is largely closed: more than 60% of households display official 'Keine Werbung' stickers on their mailboxes to refuse unaddressed advertising, so most coupon flyers never arrive.
The insight came from a fan, not a strategy deck. A photo of a mailbox bearing 'Keine Werbung — Ausser McDonald's Gutscheine' had gone viral, proof that coupon lovers would make an exception for the brand. TBWA\Zürich scaled that meme into an out-of-home activation: billboards carried peelable stickers styled exactly like the official no-ads sticker, with the McDonald's exception added, and passersby peeled one off and stuck it on their own mailbox. Mailbox installations in McDonald's restaurants dispensed more during the January 2026 McDeals Weeks.
The trick was that the sticker was both the ad and the delivery channel. Instead of pushing flyers past an opt-out wall, the campaign let self-identifying fans opt back in: the people who took the sticker were precisely the households that wanted McDonald's coupons, and their mailbox became a permission-based drop point. Because the sticker mimicked the official no-ads design, the joke travelled — it looked like the thing it was subverting.
Trade press covered the activation and even asked Swiss Post what it thought. The postal service said it had not been informed, that official no-advertising stickers still prevail, and that it cannot honour individual customer wishes — while conceding the campaign was meant with a wink. The exchange became further earned media. At Cannes Lions 2026, 'The Coupon Coup' was shortlisted in the Direct category.
What it achieved
Do not fight the opt-out sticker — hand fans an exception sticker that routes coupons to their own mailbox
Why it worked
It converted the strongest barrier — the household opt-out sticker — into the campaign's own distribution device.
Self-selection did the targeting: only fans who wanted McDonald's coupons ever carried the sticker to their door.
Mimicking the official sticker made the idea instantly readable as a joke instead of an argument against no-ads households.
Out-of-home boards and restaurant mailboxes became free sticker dispensers, so the media and the mechanism were the same object.
The Swiss Post exchange supplied controversy and follow-up coverage long after the boards came down.
What can be applied
When consumer opt-out closes a channel, find the audience that would opt back in and let them carry the message themselves — the blocker can become the medium.
Aftermath
The activation ran alongside the January 2026 McDeals Weeks and became one of the Swiss campaigns of the season: trade press covered it at launch, Swiss Post publicly responded, and it was shortlisted in the Direct category at Cannes Lions 2026, but won no Lion. Credits ran to McDonald's Switzerland and TBWA\Zürich with TBWA\BUZZ, OMD and Goldbach. The persoenlich.com article and its comment thread show it also drew criticism as weak guerrilla marketing — a reminder that its value sat in the channel mechanic, not in spectacle. No sales-lift figures were published in the sources reviewed.
