McDonald's Malaysia sold 80,000 fries-only meals in two days

Malaysians obsess over fries but had no way to buy them as a meal — McDonald's made the world's first all-fries meal and sold 80,000 in two days.

McDonald's Malaysia

The solution

In Malaysia, McDonald's fries inspire genuine fanaticism — people dig through bags for the last fry, swipe fries off friends' trays and visit McDonald's just for them. Yet for decades fries remained a side dish with no official way to buy them as the meal itself.

Leo Malaysia created the world's first 'Fans Fries Meal' — a meal that starts with fries and ends with fries — launched on International French Fry Day for 72 hours only. Three pillars carried it: cultural timing (a global moment of fry-focused excitement), location dominance (KL's Golden Triangle with large-scale DOOH billboards turning golden in unison) and integrated engagement (social, paid ads, ground activations, even hijacking the brand's own ads).

Scarcity was engineered: 72 hours and limited quantity. In the first two days all 80,000 Fans Fries Meals sold out, earning RM6.4 million in media value and over 35 million global impressions. The campaign won the Golden Kancil, Malaysia's top creative award, in 2025.

Why it worked

  • It monetizes behavior that already exists instead of trying to change it, so the demand is proven before the product launches.
  • The product itself is the media — a meal that is all fries is inherently photographable and shareable.
  • The 72-hour window converts interest into immediate purchase and hands news outlets a sellout story, making earned media self-amplifying.
What it achievedMonetize existing fanaticism; scarcity sells it outclever

What can be applied

Find the behavior that already exists and give it an official channel: the product itself is the ad, and a hard end-date converts interest into instant purchase.

Aftermath

The Fans Fries Meal sold out all 80,000 units in two days, generating RM6.4 million in earned media and 35 million global impressions. The campaign was named Golden Kancil 2025, with additional Kancil wins in launch/relaunch and small-scale brand experience.
