Libresse hid a vulva in a kebaya's flower to break a taboo
Half of Malaysian women never talk about the V-zone — Muma wove the vulva into the Nyonya Kebaya's flowers, so the taboo rides inside a garment worn proudly.
Libresse (Vinda Marketing Malaysia)
The solution
Libresse's commissioned 'Global V Taboo Tracker' — 14,000 men and women across seven markets — found deep silence around the female intimate area in Malaysia: 50% of Malaysian women will never speak about their V, one in three Malaysians feel sorry for how their vulva looks, and 56% of Malaysian teens would rather be bullied at school than talk about periods. The silence feeds real harms: genital mutilation, sexual grooming, period spot-checks in schools, undiagnosed endometriosis.
Muma searched the culture for an object that had already made Malaysian women comfortable with their bodies and found the Nyonya Kebaya — created in the 1920s, semi-transparent, lace-embroidered and figure-hugging, a garment that defied the conservative fashion of its time and inspired women to embrace their sexuality, still worn today. Working with local kebaya craftswomen, the agency redesigned the kebaya's two signature floral motifs — the Peony and the Chrysanthemum — with a vulva hand-woven into the heart of each flower.
The 'Vulva Kebaya' lets the unacceptable image ride into the open inside an acceptable one: a garment women are proud to wear, gift and photograph. The campaign won the Golden Kancil 2022 along with multiple Golds and Silvers.
Why it worked
- Conceal-to-reveal: the taboo image hides inside a flower on a garment women are proud to wear, so the conversation starts from a place of pride, not shame.
- The garment's own history — concealing while revealing the female silhouette — mirrors the message, making the artifact itself an argument.
- Wearing and gifting the kebaya is an act of participation rather than a lecture, so the audience does the spreading.
What can be applied
When a topic is unacceptable, don't shout it — embed it in a beloved cultural object whose history already mirrors the message, and let the audience carry it into the open themselves.
Aftermath
V-Kebaya won the Golden Kancil 2022 plus Golds in cultural-insights brand experience and Kancil for Good and Silvers in non-digital brand experience and direct marketing. No sales or behavior-change metrics have been published.
