McDonald's Denmark renamed its menu in Counter-Strike slang
For €10,000, McDonald's made gamers the only audience that understood its ads — and reached 110 million potential impressions.
McDonald's Denmark
the move
Esports fans are famously hard for fast-food brands to reach: they ignore mainstream advertising and distrust brands that shout at them. McDonald's Denmark found that the world's best Counter-Strike team was Danish, and the region's biggest tournament was coming to Copenhagen.
With NORD DDB, McDonald's renamed its menu in Counter-Strike vocabulary — a cheeseburger became an 'eco round,' the economic round every player knows — and ran the ads on metro stations near the Royal Arena, on social media and inside the game itself, for a total media spend under €10,000.
The genius was the exclusion. People outside the game could not decode the ads, which made them feel like a private joke the community was in on. Gamers shared and translated them; media in 18 countries covered the stunt, delivering more than 110 million potential impressions.
The week-long campaign, shortlisted at D&AD 2019, showed that a tiny budget aimed with insider language can outperform broadcast spend aimed at everyone.
why it works
- Insider slang made the ads unreadable to outsiders and precious to gamers
- The community did the sharing, so the reach came free
- The event tie-in gave the campaign a time and place to be noticed
- Under €10,000 of spend produced coverage in 18 countries
what transfers
Exclusive language is a targeting mechanism: when only the audience understands the ad, the ad becomes a badge they share — and scarcity of meaning earns attention that paid reach cannot buy.
what came after
The Esport Menu ran from 29 October to 4 November 2018 around the BLAST Pro Series and was shortlisted at D&AD 2019. Its reception on the Counter-Strike subreddit and in international press made it a standard case study in advertising to subcultures on near-zero budgets.
