Kirin's electric spoon makes low-salt food taste saltier, no sodium added

A weak electric current through the spoon enhances the salty and umami taste of low-sodium food by about 1.5x, so diets survive without more salt.

Japan's daily salt intake is 10.1g against the WHO's 5.0g recommendation. In Kirin's survey of people on or considering low-sodium diets, about 60% saw problems with such food and roughly 80% of those were dissatisfied with the taste — the diet fails at the dinner table, not in the clinic.

Starting R&D in 2019 with Meiji University's Miyashita Laboratory, Kirin built the Electric Salt Spoon: a weak electric current enhances the saltiness and umami of low-sodium food by about 1.5 times. It launched on May 20, 2024 with only 200 units at ¥19,800, sold by lottery, then reached Hands stores in June.

The idea attacks excessive salt intake at the utensil — no new recipe, no taste compromise. In September 2025 Kirin added an Electric Salt Cup and a redesigned spoon, and it aims to bring Electric Salt to Asian markets by 2026. The project was shortlisted for the Innovation Spikes at Spikes Asia 2025.

Kirin kept expanding the line: the Electric Salt Cup and an upgraded dishwasher-safe spoon shipped on September 9, 2025, and the company targets Asian markets by 2026. Demos at CES 2025 drew wide coverage, and the Spikes Asia 2025 Innovation shortlist recognized the idea.
