Painter's 1892 crown cork made the bottle seal disposable and cheap
A thin cork disc under crimped metal teeth held carbonation, cost pennies, and sold itself — by 1906 plants ran on four continents.

In the late 19th century bottled beer and soda were growing fast, but sealing carbonated drinks was unsolved: stoppers made of cork, glass, wire and rubber were expensive, unsanitary and unreliable, and corks dried out, causing leaks. By the 1880s the US Patent Office had approved an estimated 1,500 bottle stopper patents.
William Painter, a Baltimore machine-shop foreman, experimented through 1888-1891 before hitting on the answer: a thin cork liner for a gas-tight seal plus a metal cap with a crimped, corrugated edge that locked under the bottle's rim. The design kept the drink from touching the metal, cost almost nothing, and was meant to be thrown away after one use — his patent described the caps as 'so inexpensive as to warrant throwing them away after a single use'. On 2 February 1892 he was granted three patents for the system and founded Crown Cork & Seal Company in Baltimore.
The obstacle was adoption: bottles needed a special neck and someone had to press the caps on efficiently. Painter answered with a foot-powered crowner machine he sold to bottlers and retailers, and the cap spread quickly around the world — by 1906 his company was opening plants in Germany, France, Brazil and Japan. By the 1930s Crown Cork & Seal was providing nearly half the world's bottle caps.

what came after
The crown cork's basic design is still in use today, with plastic replacing cork liners in the 1950s and the crown-finish bottle standardised in 1923. Crown Cork & Seal kept expanding into packaging and became part of Crown Holdings in 2003, a global company producing billions of caps a year with more than $9 billion in annual sales.
