Heathrow's live transfer forecasts let flow managers act in real time

Over a quarter of Heathrow passengers connect; a CART-based predictor gave 2-hour transfer forecasts every five minutes in a live Terminal 5 trial.

More than a quarter of Heathrow's passengers are making a flight transfer, so connection flow is a major operations lever. Airport operations centres exist to share data across stakeholders, but deciding what to predict and how to use it live was the open question.

Eurocontrol commissioned a study in early 2016, and a consortium led by University College London with the University of Virginia and Heathrow focused on predicting transfer journeys. The team built models with classical and regression trees (CART) from multiple databases.

In a live trial on 19 July 2016, the system refreshed 2-hour window predictions every five minutes, with prediction intervals, checked against cameras in Terminal 5. The trial demonstrated that accurate live forecasts are possible and useful for flow managers.

The pilot was published as a Wagner Prize special-issue paper in the INFORMS Journal on Applied Analytics (2020), an example of airport collaborative decision-making with real-time analytics.
