Hanwha powered smart beehives with solar panels to save the bees
A solar manufacturer answered the myth that panels kill bees by building a solar-powered smart hive, shortlisted at Spikes and Cannes.
Hanwha
the move
Korea's honeybee population collapsed in 2022, with about 7.8 billion bees lost, and solar panels were widely blamed. Hanwha, a B2B solar manufacturer with no previous bee link, decided to answer the accusation by building the Solar Beehive, a smart hive powered by five rooftop solar panels.
Four smart systems, water and food supply, temperature and humidity control, CO2 concentration control, and hornet intrusion detection and blocking, gave bees an optimal habitat. Hanwha collaborated with the Korea National University of Agriculture and Fisheries, developed the hive over six months, and launched it on World Bee Day 2022 with a website streaming live data.
A scholarly paper published in November 2022 documented the hive's effectiveness, and the campaign reached 39.2 million YouTube views, about 85% of Korea's population, with 98% positive mentions of solar panels and Hanwha. Positive brand mentions rose 2.6 times, and the renewable division recorded a billion dollars in quarterly sales, up 61% in profit. The work was shortlisted at the 2023 Innovation Spikes and Cannes Lions.
why it works
- Giving the brand's product a conservation purpose turned a B2B maker into a likeable name.
- Real-time hive data made the environmental claim verifiable rather than rhetorical.
- A university partnership and a scholarly paper pre-empted greenwashing accusations.
what transfers
When your product is accused of killing something people love, build a demonstration that visibly restores it; data beats a rebuttal.
what came after
The Solar Beehive was presented at the 2023 World Economic Forum as an example of biodiversity conservation, its smart features were adopted by beekeepers nationwide, and it was donated as educational material to the university to train future apiarists.
