E-Mart's No Brand sold unbranded goods as the brand — and grew 60x in ten years

Stripped everything unnecessary out of products — even toilet lids — No Brand priced itself 30–50% below national brands and let word of mouth do the marketing.

E-Mart (No Brand)

the move

In 2015 E-Mart launched No Brand with the slogan 'It's not a brand. It's the consumer.' After more than a decade of private-label products that shoppers kept rejecting, the team decided the problem was that PL goods were only cheap — they had never been made into brands.

No Brand's method is subtraction. Its first product was a toilet cover without a lid, an unnecessary part that raised cost; the first hit was potato chips priced well below the famous national brand, which have now sold 60 million bags. Every product is tested for quality first, priced 30–50% below national brands and about 20% below other private labels, with savings found in packaging and design — never ingredients.

With no paid marketing, word of mouth carried the brand: butter-cookie tins became social-media stars. The first standalone No Brand store opened in 2016 as a hard-discount experiment; by 2024 revenue was ₩1.39 trillion, about 60 times the first year's ₩23.4 billion.

why it works

  • Subtracting real costs (lids, packaging, ads) funds a price advantage rivals can't match.
  • Quality-first ordering built trust, so 'No Brand' became a reason to buy.
  • Standalone stores turned a private label into a destination.
  • Word of mouth replaced marketing spend, feeding the low-price loop.

what transfers

A private label can beat national brands by making 'no brand' the brand: cut costs the customer never sees, reinvest the saving in quality, and let repeat buyers advertise for you.

what came after

No Brand grew to more than 270 dedicated stores across South Korea, launched collaborations like Super Matcha and Our Bakery, and became the model other Korean retailers copied. Management says the next decade is about deepening trust rather than adding stores — the brand's stated formula remains quality, price, differentiation.
