Fendt's Vario gearbox gave tractors one continuous drive range — and made rivals follow
In 1996 Fendt put a hydrostatic power-split CVT in its Favorit 926, letting farmers drive any speed smoothly; within years the Vario was the industry standard.

The solution
In the early 1990s tractor drivers still chose between gear steps: pick a ratio, accept the compromise between speed, power and engine efficiency. Fendt engineer Hans Marschall had chased a different idea since the 1950s — a continuously variable drive with no fixed gears at all.
The Vario transmission splits engine power between a hydraulic path and a mechanical path and varies the ratio smoothly through one lever, so the engine always runs in its most efficient speed range. A three-person development group started on series readiness in 1987; in 1995 the 260hp Favorit 926 Vario was shown at Agritechnica, and from 1996 the first 900-series Varios worked on farms.
Farmers and the trade press called it a milestone, and skeptical competitors had to develop their own solutions. Fendt rolled Vario across its model lines — the 400 series brought it to the 100hp class in 1999 — and within about 14 years the entire fleet was stepless; today continuously variable drive is the industry standard.

Aftermath
The Vario became Fendt's signature: the 900 series hit 50,000 units in July 2026 and won design awards, and continuously variable transmissions are now standard across the industry. Fendt still calls the 1996 launch the foundation of its modern success.
