Royal Australian Mint made a dollar coin that is meant to be given away.
The Royal Australian Mint minted a $1 coin designed to be donated, so the touchable currency itself became the charity ask.

the move
In 2020, as Australia shifted to contactless and online shopping, the Royal Australian Mint saw that the coins charities and homeless people counted on were disappearing. Saatchi & Saatchi Australia's answer was not an ad but a new object: a $1 coin stamped 'Donation Dollar: Give to help others', minted one for every Australian.
The design deliberately avoided looking precious. Currency is governed by Gresham's Law, the tendency people have to spend the 'bad' coin and keep the shiny one, so a too-attractive Donation Dollar would have been hoarded. Simplicity meant the whole coin communicated only the giving message.
The coin's rippled green centre wears away as it circulates, exposing gold underneath. That wear is the mechanism: each pass reinforces the premise that this particular coin is meant to move on, so it keeps being handed over instead of sitting in a wallet.
why it works
- A coin is already in everyone's pocket, so no paid media is needed to reach people
- Gresham's Law meant making it look plain stops people hoarding it as a keepsake
- The wearing centre turns each hand-off into a fresh reminder to give it away
- A physical coin keeps the tactile moment of giving that digital donations lose
what transfers
When the medium you distribute is already in everyone's hands, the medium can be the message; design the object you already circulate instead of buying a new moment to speak.
what came after
Within the first two months, 52% of the coins had been donated and recirculated. The Mint released a further five million Donation Dollars in 2022, and the idea drew attention from other countries. Australian dollar coins typically circulate for around 30 years, so each one keeps working as a prompt for decades.
