Disney moved its queues into data so guests could wait without standing
the problem
Everyone wanted the same ride at noon

By the late 1990s Disney's most popular attractions faced the same peak-load problem any single-server system has: demand for the ride is fixed capacity per hour, but arrivals cluster around opening, lunch and the cool part of the afternoon. The standard answer was a longer physical line, sometimes managed with switchbacks and shade — guests stood, in person, for the privilege of eventually riding.
Disney tried an alternative instead: FastPass, launched in July 1999 starting with a handful of Animal Kingdom attractions before spreading across Walt Disney World. A kiosk issued a paper ticket with a return-time window, reserving a guest's place in the ride's queue without requiring their body to occupy it. The wait still existed — it was simply relocated into the ride's own booking system instead of the physical line.
what everyone would do
Build a longer, better-managed physical line -- switchbacks, shade structures, entertainment to pass the time -- the standard theme-park response to a popular ride's peak-hour crowding, which still requires guests to stand in place for the entire wait.
what they saw
The thing guests actually hated wasn't the wait itself, it was standing still to hold their place in it -- the ride's fixed hourly capacity meant the total wait time couldn't shrink, but nothing required that wait to be spent occupying physical space in a line. A reservation could hold a guest's place exactly as effectively as their body could, and it would let them spend the same wait shopping, eating, or riding something else.

why it works
Because a ride's throughput is fixed regardless of how guests wait, moving the queue into a reservation system doesn't create any new capacity, it just decouples 'holding your place in line' from 'standing physically in that line.' Guests issued a return-time window are still queued, just virtually, which frees their actual bodies to spend that same interval in shops and restaurants elsewhere in the park -- generating revenue Disney would otherwise have lost to idle standing time, while guests experience the wait as freedom rather than confinement even though the total time to ride hasn't changed at all.
the payoff
Guests absorbed into shops and restaurants instead of queues; the virtual-queue pattern spread to clinics, government offices and restaurants.
where it breaks
The mechanism depends on there being something valuable for the freed-up wait time to be spent on -- a fixed-capacity resource with no surrounding ecosystem to redirect demand into (a single medical scanner, a passport office) gets the convenience benefit for the customer but none of the revenue-capture benefit an amusement park gets from guests shopping while they wait. It also requires guests to trust the reservation will actually be honored at the promised time; a system that frequently fails to seat or serve reservation holders on schedule erodes the trust the whole virtual-queue model depends on, and guests revert to physically lining up to guarantee their spot.
what came after
FastPass ran as a free perk for over two decades before Disney retired it on 19 October 2021, replacing it with the paid Genie+ and Lightning Lane system — the same virtual-queue mechanics, but sold per day (around $15) or per ride, rather than given away. The underlying pattern outlived the free version: virtual queuing by kiosk, app or SMS is now common well beyond theme parks.
