By the 1960s Sweden was one of the last countries in mainland Europe still driving on the left, surrounded by right-hand-traffic neighbors, while roughly 90% of Swedish cars were already left-hand-drive imports built for right-side roads — meaning most drivers sat on the wrong side to see around the car ahead when overtaking, a mismatch blamed for a steady toll of head-on collisions. A 1955 referendum had rejected switching to the right by 83%, so the political appetite for change was, on paper, close to zero.

Four years of preparation — new lane markings and signage installed but covered until the day, redesigned intersections and bus stops, a national safety-information campaign including a pop single ('Håll dig till höger, Svensson') — had already done the harder work of behavior change before the physical switch itself took ten minutes.

Because two vehicles on the same road can't safely follow different conventions even for a moment, a synchronized cutover eliminates the exact failure mode a gradual transition would create -- there is no window of time where any driver on any road can be wrong about which side to drive on, because everyone switches at the same instant everywhere. Front-loading four years of behavioral preparation (redesigned intersections, a public safety campaign, even a pop song) before the mechanical switch meant the actual cutover only had to change which side of the road cars traveled on, not what drivers knew or expected, which is why ten minutes of stopped traffic was enough to convert a nationwide risk into a one-day event with fewer accidents than an ordinary Sunday.

Sweden recorded only 157 minor traffic accidents nationwide on Dagen H, just 32 with injuries, far below a normal day's baseline, and road fatalities and accident rates fell measurably in the weeks and months that followed as drivers drove more cautiously through the adjustment — before reverting to prior trend levels roughly three years later as the caution wore off.

The approach depends on the two states genuinely being incompatible in a way that makes partial coexistence dangerous rather than merely inconvenient -- for changes where old and new can safely run in parallel (most software migrations, most format changes), a hard synchronized cutover is unnecessary risk instead of risk reduction.
