One steel box replaced the longshoreman's back and remade world trade

Every crate was loaded by hand

In 1937 truck owner Malcolm McLean spent a full day waiting at a New Jersey pier while dockworkers unloaded his cotton bales piece by piece to load them onto a ship — the same break-bulk process every port in the world used, one crate, sack or bale at a time, each handled by hand multiple times between factory and destination.
McLean spent two decades pursuing the idea before converting a surplus tanker into the Ideal-X, which sailed from Newark to Houston on 26 April 1956 carrying 58 steel containers loaded straight off truck chassis. His own engineers calculated the loading cost at 15.7 cents a tonne against $5.83 a tonne for loose cargo — the same ship, the same port, a cost drop of over 97%.
what everyone would do
The industry's obvious lever was to make break-bulk handling faster — better cranes, more efficient stevedore gangs, faster paperwork — because the cargo-handling problem was framed as a labor and logistics problem to optimize, not eliminate. That fails because no amount of efficiency on hand-loading a hold one crate at a time closes a 97% cost gap; the bottleneck wasn't the speed of the handling, it was the number of times any given piece of cargo had to be touched.
what they saw
McLean, a trucker rather than a shipping man, saw that the expensive part of a voyage wasn't the sailing — it was the repeated handling of cargo at every transfer between truck, warehouse and ship. If the box itself never opened between factory and destination, most of that handling simply disappeared. The insight belonged to an outsider precisely because it required not caring about ships at all: the unit that needed redesigning was the box, not the crane or the gang.

why it works
Standardizing on one sealed, stackable steel unit means the same box moves from truck chassis to crane to ship's hold to a different truck chassis without ever being unpacked, so labor is spent once per box instead of once per item inside it — this is why McLean's own figures showed loading cost fall from $5.83 to roughly 16 cents a ton on the very first voyage. But the saving only compounds economy-wide once ports, cranes, ships and trucks all standardize on the same dimensions and corner fittings, because a non-standard container can't be lifted by someone else's crane or stacked with someone else's boxes — which is why ISO 668's 1968 standard, not the Ideal-X's 1956 voyage, is what let the idea escape one company and restructure global trade.

Loading costs fell from dollars to cents per ton, ports restructured around cranes, and global supply chains became economic.
where it breaks
The gain depends on volume and repetition high enough to amortize the fixed cost of container-compatible ports, cranes and chassis fleets; a low-volume or highly irregular trade route may never recoup that infrastructure. It also depends on the cargo being suitable for standardized units — bulk commodities, oversized freight, and anything requiring specialized handling gain little or nothing. And the network effect that makes the box valuable is also its trap: an early mover who picks incompatible dimensions, as McLean initially favored before ISO settled the standard, risks being locked out once the rest of the industry converges on someone else's size.
what came after
ISO 668, fixing the dimensions and corner fittings every container and every crane in the world would use, was first published in 1968 — without it, McLean's box would have stayed one company's private system rather than becoming the universal unit of trade. Container shipping went on to make it cheap enough to manufacture a product on one continent and sell it on another, restructuring global manufacturing around the assumption that moving a finished good costs almost nothing next to making it.
