Coors Light painted rooftop ads that literally cool the buildings below
Reflective white 'Chillboards' on Miami rooftops cut roof heat up to 50°F and AC costs up to 20% — an ad that performs the beer's 'Made to Chill' promise.
Coors Light (Molson Coors)
The solution
Rooftop billboards are mostly seen from airplanes — a placement advertisers usually avoid. For Coors Light, though, roofs were the perfect surface for a brand built around the idea of chilling, in a city whose biggest problem in summer is heat.
Working with DDB Chicago, adam&eveDDB and NORD DDB, Molson Coors painted 'Chillboards' across Miami apartment rooftops using a reflective white coating that reflects 85% of sunlight. The typography was engineered as well as styled: each letter was a solid white block with minimal incisions and rounding to maximize heat-reflecting surface.
The results were measurable, not just metaphorical: roof surface temperatures dropped by up to 50°F (28°C), internal temperatures by 10°F (6°C), and air-conditioning costs fell by up to 20% on the treated buildings. The brand gave away 5,000 gallons of the reflective paint so more residents could replicate the effect.
The work was invisible to pedestrians but impossible to ignore from the air and online, and it collected 12 shortlists at the 2023 One Show — precisely because the ad performed its own message.
Why it worked
- The medium (roofs, white paint) delivered the brand message (chill) literally.
- Measurable cooling gave the claim scientific credibility instead of marketing puffery.
- Giving away paint extended the idea beyond the paid installations.
- Only-visible-from-the-air became a feature that drove curiosity and sharing.
What can be applied
If your brand promise is a physical state, design the ad to deliver that state for the people who see it. Functional media turns impressions into tangible community benefit and earns free coverage.
Aftermath
Chillboards collected a dozen One Show 2023 shortlists plus ADC honors and Clio recognition, and its cooling results were quoted in design and sustainability coverage. The 'functional billboard' idea became a reference point for brands that make their media do real work, though no rival replicated the physics quite as neatly.
